When installing the self-aligning roller bearings, what temperature range is considered appropriate?
When installing self-aligning roller bearings, the appropriate heating temperature needs to be determined by considering factors such as the bearing material, the fit interference amount, and the installation environment. Generally, it is recommended to control the temperature within the range of 80℃ - 120℃. Specific details can be further refined according to the following principles:
1. Base temperature range: 80℃ - 120℃ (safety logic)
Material safety threshold
The tempering temperature of commonly used high-carbon chromium bearing steel (such as GCr15) is 150℃ - 180℃. However, when the temperature exceeds 120℃, the material will start to undergo "secondary tempering", resulting in a decrease in hardness (e.g., from 62HRC to below 58HRC). Therefore, 120℃ is the upper red line for the temperature limit.
When the temperature is below 80℃, the expansion of the inner hole is insufficient (for a bearing with an inner diameter of 100mm, the expansion at 80℃ is approximately 0.088mm), which may not meet the minimum gap required for the interference fit. Therefore, 80℃ is the lower limit for effective expansion.
Matching of fit interference
For bearings with interference fit, the inner hole needs to be expanded to a "zero gap" or a very small gap (for an interference fit of 0.05mm, the expansion should be ≥ 0.075mm). According to the thermal expansion formula (ΔD = D × α × ΔT, where α is the linear expansion coefficient of steel 11 × 10⁻⁶/℃), it can be calculated that:
For a bearing with an inner diameter of 100mm and an interference fit of 0.05mm, the minimum temperature rise ΔT = 0.05/(100 × 11 × 10⁻⁶) ≈ 45℃. If the ambient temperature is 25℃, then the heating temperature needs to be ≥ 70℃. However, considering the installation margin, the actual recommended temperature is ≥ 80℃.
